Independent Design

Besides working as a designer and teacher, I have done plenty of other projects on the side. They range from designing workshops with customized props for a shopping mall, video promotion, logo design and simple animation.

During the Dutch Days (promotion of Dutch Culture and brands in China) I was asked to organize a workshop for visitors of the shopping mall. The typical dutch elements like the tulip, wooden shoe, cheese, windmill and cow are turned into little pieces of art, stuffed with potpourri to provide a delicious memory for people at home. The shopping mall is focused on furniture and interior design.

Students were invited to make a design for a life-sized cow model. One was selected and applied to the cow, which in turn was revealed during the opening show of the Dutch Days in the shopping mall.

The Ocean Park, Chengdu invited us to promote Dutch Culture in their park. The topics made people in China aware of the roots of certain topics like the tulip, Nijntje (in het Chinees 米菲兔). This was also a chance to introduce them to peculiar typical Dutch traditions such as Koekhappen. The visitors were invited to paint on the cow to stimulate artistic expression, after they were all reminded Van Gogh is actually from The Netherlands.

In the crowded city with thousands of cars, buses, taxis, plenty of lightrail trains and millions of people, there is a beautiful serene environment of WuYu hotel. This art hotel is beautifully designed with quality materials for chairs, couches, bathroom, bed and the list goes on. The artworks combined with the plants and flowers really can make you calm down after your busy day in the city.

Chongqing is situated in between two mountain ridges which creates a large variety of weather conditions. In the summer the heat can easily reach close to 50° and the fog/smog can really limit your view.

Veeson is a new brand for personal communication devices like walkie-talkies. The logo radiates the quality and connection people can achieve.

A simple animation to reveal a portrait, combining both Art and Design, finishing with the famous quote from 1984:

“Design ist Kunst, die sich nützlich macht.”
